Genoa G8, 2001
Friday, July 20
|
On Friday, July 20, 2001, several authorized demonstrations were scheduled in different areas of Genoa. The day brought together a wide range of organized groups, including labor, environmental, pacifist, and anti-globalization movements. Some groups had also publicly declared their intention to enter the red zone established around the summit area.
During the morning and early afternoon, marches and public gatherings took place across the city. As the day progressed, tensions increased and episodes of direct confrontation began to emerge in different locations. Black Bloc groups became active in several parts of Genoa, carrying out acts of vandalism, property destruction, and street violence, while clashes with law enforcement spread through the city. In this increasingly confused and fragmented situation, many authorized demonstrations were disrupted. Participants in different areas were affected by police charges, tear gas, and violent interventions, including peaceful demonstrators, photographers, and videomakers present in the streets and squares. During the afternoon, the most dramatic episode of the day took place in Piazza Alimonda, where Carlo Giuliani was killed. By the end of the day, many demonstrators gathered in Piazzale Kennedy, where speakers and participants attempted to respond collectively to the violence and disorder that had marked the protests. For many, July 20 became one of the defining days of the Genoa G8, leaving a lasting impact on the movement that had formed around the demonstrations against global economic policies. FOOTAGE //
