Following the clashes in Via Tolemaide, a Carabinieri charge in Via Caffa ended in a chaotic retreat. In Piazza Alimonda, a Land Rover Defender carrying three officers became trapped next to a garbage bin, which was used as cover by one of the Carabinieri.
While the vehicle was stationary, several demonstrators surrounded and struck it. Among them was Carlo Giuliani, who lifted a fire extinguisher. From inside the vehicle, Carabiniere Mario Placanica fired two shots, one of which struck Giuliani in the face, causing his death. In an attempt to move away, the Defender passed over his body twice.
