At the end of May, spurred on by a rash of racially charged events, over 450 major protests were held in cities and towns across the United States and three continents. The breaking point was due primarily to the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, eventually charged with second-degree murder after a video circulated showing Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes while Floyd pleaded for his life, repeating: "I can't breathe." Following protesters' demands for additional prosecutions, three other officers were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.
Black Lives Matter organized rallies in the United States and worldwide from May 30 onwards, with protesters enacting Floyd's final moments, many lying down in streets and on bridges, yelling "I can't breathe," while others marched by the thousands, some carrying signs that read, "Tell your brother in blue, don't shoot"—"Who do you call when the murderer wears a badge?" and "Justice for George Floyd." While global in nature and supported by several unassociated organizations, the Black Lives Matter movement has been inextricably linked to these monumental protests. Black Lives Matter called to "defund the police", a slogan with varying interpretations from police abolition to divestment from police and prisons to reinvestment in social services in communities of color.
From May 26 to August 22, there were more than 7,750 BLM-linked demonstrations in over 2,240 locations throughout the United States.

Le proteste razziali negli Stati Uniti d'America dette anche proteste per George Floyd sono state una serie di proteste e rivolte come risposta alla brutalità della polizia e al razzismo, avviatosi come proteste locali nell'area metropolitana di Minneapolis-Saint Paul, nel Minnesota prima di diffondersi negli Stati Uniti e poi in varie parti del mondo. Le proteste hanno preso avvio a Minneapolis il 26 maggio 2020 dopo la morte di George Floyd, dopo che un ufficiale del dipartimento di polizia di Minneapolis (MPD) Derek Chauvin si è inginocchiato sul suo collo per 8 minuti e 46 secondi durante un arresto della sera precedente, uccidendolo.
Al 13 giugno, ci sono state contestazioni simultanee in oltre 2000 altre città negli Stati Uniti e hanno sostenuto a livello internazionale coloro che chiedevano giustizia per Floyd, oltre a denunciare l'eccessiva brutalità della polizia statunitense.
Almeno 12 grandi città hanno dichiarato il coprifuoco la sera del 30 maggio e al 31 maggio governatori di 15 stati (incluso il Minnesota) e il Distretto di Columbia avevano avvisato la Guardia Nazionale, con oltre 5.000 truppe. Dall'inizio delle proteste alla notte del 22 giugno, almeno 14.000 persone sono state arrestate.
